What is a Sustainability Mindshift?

Sustainability n. “practices that support ecological, human, and economic health and vitality.”
 
Mind n. “the element of a person that enables them to be aware of the world and their experiences, to think, and to feel; the faculty of consciousness and thought.”
 
Shift n. “a slight change in position, direction, or tendency”
 

A Sustainability Mindshift is:

  • the process an individual or organization goes through as it develops new sustainability wisdom and context – a lens through which to see and relate to the world – on their journey of transformation toward a sustainable future.
  • the development of new sustainable mental models which guide decision-making about how to operate, communicate, and collaborate with key stakeholders to maximize shared value and minimize negative impacts.
  • a way to accelerate the development of key sustainability leadership skills and capabilities, and to align culture for more effective and sustainable business scale, impact and results.

Regeneration is an emerging paradigm that is calling us away from the still dominant but dying mechanistic mindset where people and organizations are treated as machines. In this worldview, efficiency, productivity, and profit are prioritized at the expense of the health, wellbeing, and thrivability of employees, society, and the planet. This has been a leading cause of today’s greatest environmental and social challenges. Many of today’s sustainability efforts have fallen into the trap of using this mechanistic perspective to try to “fix” our broken systems.

As Albert Einstein once said, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”
